Appearance 单斜针状或棱状结晶。丁烯酸有顺式和反式两种异构体，通常的丁烯酸是反式丁烯酸。反式异构体熔点71.4-71.7℃，沸点184.7℃，相对密度1.018（15/4℃），折射率1.4228，在25℃时100ml水中溶解度为9.4g，溶于乙醇、乙醚和丙酮中，在甲苯溶液中转化为顺式巴豆酸。顺式异构体熔点15.5℃，沸点169℃（100kPa），相对密度1.0265（20/4℃），折射率1.4456，在100ml（20℃）水中溶解度为7.61g，溶于乙醇。与60%硫酸、微量盐酸或溴化氢共热时，可转化为反式巴豆酸；巴豆酸对皮肤的刺激性与丙烯酸相似。
